Literacy Activity

It is important to talk about the books we read in order to enhance children's understanding.

Ask your child the following questions:

What was your favourite part of the story?

Why did you like that bit?

Which food do you think is the most delicious?

Which food do you think would be disgusting?

Are there any foods that you have not tried before?

Draw a picture of your favourite part of the story.

Add labels to your picture by segmenting the sounds to spell words.

You could try to write a sentence...

e.g. 'Then he ate two pears.' OR  'Then he ate two pears but he was still hungry.'

Extension task-

Use the example below to make your own word mat to help you with future writing tasks about the story.

Draw the pictures first then get an adult to help you write the words below each picture. If you want to you could cut them out and use them as flash cards.

If you have access to a printer, use this workbook to help your pencil control. If you do not have a printer, an adult could draw some lines or shapes using dots for you to trace and then copy. Try this with letters and words too :)
