Reading at home KS2

Reading at home - Keystage 2

As children become more fluent in their reading and no longer require a synthetic phonics programme, they will be moved onto a reading 'scheme'.  Our chosen scheme is PM books. They are finely graded and provide support through vocabulary, sentence structure, length of text and images selected.  The children move through the levels which runs to Level 30.  Once they have completed all the levels or we feel they are a confident reader, your child will become an 'independent reader' where they can choose their own reading materials from a wide range of genres, authors and styles.

Even though a child can read, they can only improve with regular reading. As they move into Keystage 2, the time they read at home everyday should also increase. We would love all of our children to read for at least 10 minutes a day, increasing to 20 minutes in Year 6.  This is to allow them to build up the reading speed, fluency and stamina to not only become a great reader, but to allow them to have the best chance of achieving well in the Year 6 SAT's test in May.

Reading Plus

Reading Plus is an online reading platform which children can access at home and school. All pupils have their own log in details.

Once the children are assessed, they can choose from a wide range of texts and complete a 'quiz' on what they have read.

The programme can also assess their reading speed and supports their eye tracking movements to help them improve.

Pupils who use the programme the most show the greatest improvement in their reading fluency and comprehension.

Log in details can be requested from your child's class teacher.
