Whole Class Reading

At St Joseph's, we understand how vital reading is and we are passionate about it.

We teach the reading domains or areas as set out in the National Curriculum and use the mnemonic of reading 'VIPERS' to help the children remember which skills they are learning.  Using all these skills together, develops children into confident and competent readers.

Children in Keystage 2 have 3 x 45 minute reading lessons in which these skills are taught.

The grid below suggest some questions which can be asked for each of the key reading skills.  VIPERS can be used for any books - picture books and even films!
