School Uniform

School Uniform at St. Joseph's.

At St. Joseph’s we expect that all children should wear clothing that is in keeping with a purposeful learning ethos. We have the highest expectations and the cooperation of all parents/carers is sought in ensuring these high standards are maintained.

We believe that a school uniform:

  • promotes a sense of pride in the school;
  • creates a feeling of belonging;
  • is practical and distinctive;
  • identifies the children as belonging to our school community;
  • is not distracting in class;
  • makes children feel equal to one another in terms of appearance;
  • reflects the sense both of community and of diversity that the school takes pride in;

Our school uniform:

  • white polo shirt
  • royal blue sweatshirt or cardigan
  • grey skirt or trousers
  • In the summer children may wear blue and white checked dresses.

PE Kit:

  • Yellow t-shirt
  • blue shorts
  • trainers
  • PE Hoodie (school buy all new pupils their first hoodie) (NB if your child is not wearing the school logo hoodie, a school jumper may also be worn. Children cannot wear other branded hoodies on PE days.)

Children should only wear their PE kit on their PE days.  Information regarding PE days can be found on our weekly newsletters.

There is no expectation for children to wear uniform with the school logo on.

Plain jumpers/cardigans and polo shirts bought from supermarkets or other retailers can also be worn.

However, If you wish to purchase school uniform with the school logo, this is available from Emblematic:

https://emblematic.co.uk/longbenton-store/

This gives you the option of buying over the counter or ordering online for delivery to your home address (postage and packing charges apply – details can be found on the Emblematic website) or choosing to have your order delivered to school for you to collect free of charge.

These arrangements enable uniform to be purchases all year round, including school holidays.

PE Hoodies are available from Anne Thomas Workwear, 180 Park View, Whitley Bay. NE26 3QP

There is also a ‘pre-loved’ uniform display in the school entrance for parents to choose from.

School Shoes

Could all parents ensure that school shoes are all black in colour and are appropriate for school and fasten firmly to allow the children to run and play in the yard and on the field safely. No trainers should be worn except for P.E.

Jewellery

A small, plain wrist watch (not smart watch) is the only permitted item of jewellery and it must be removed for P.E. No necklaces, bracelets or ear-rings are allowed to be worn at any time for health and safety reasons.

Hair Styles and Accessories

We expect children to avoid extremes of fashion in uniform and appearance, particularly with regard to hairstyles. Children with long hair should wear it tied or clipped back for school. Hair accessories should be discreet and ideally in school colours.

Make-up Children are not to wear make-up this includes lip gloss, mascara, nail varnish or transfer tattoos for school.  Vaseline and Chapsticks, however, are permitted, especially in cold weather.

In choosing a school that promotes school uniform, the governors assume that parents will support staff when they enforce school uniform related rules.

A full copy of our Uniform Policy can be found in the 'Policies' section of our website.
